Anger flows after first arrest

General NewsAfter the last week of devastation, the communities of Victoria affected by the recent bush fires have ridden an emotional roller coaster. Sadness, sorrow, pain, heart ache, loss, guilt, happiness, thankfulness, comradeship, friendship, and the list could go on of the emotions people may have felt. We have seen the whole country band together to help those affected as Australians do so well. Our national pride and mate ship always shine through the most  during the darkest times.

Now we are having the emotional tide start to turn with the first arrest of an arsonist whom is suspected of starting the Churchill fire. Online forums are now being flooded by posts of hatred, calls for torture and more.

As quoted in the article below, everyone is entitled to a fair trial:

[quote]Police say a man charged over one of Victoria's deadly bushfires must be allowed a fair trial.

The community can have faith in the justice system, they say.

The man, whose identity cannot be released, was arrested on Friday and charged with crimes including arson and possessing child pornography.

He is accused of lighting the Churchill fire, which killed 21 people.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said he believed the man could get a fair trial and called on the public to allow the justice system to do its job.

"We have got to respect the system, our whole justice system is based on providing fairness to everyone that's charged ... because there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty," he said.

The man remains in custody and is due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday.

My hesitation is with our present legal system, is it really able to give the public of Australia a fair trial or just the accused. I mean will he, if found guilty, be given a sentence really worth the devastation and loss caused. Is it going to be a case of 15 years, parole in 7 after good behaviour? or are we going to see true justice. What is true justice for these sort of crimes?

Would you be interested in signing a petition to submit to all levels of Government, putting forward the ideas of the community in relation to the changes that we see need to be made in the Australian law to make sure these sorts of crimes against our communities are dealt with in the correct manner? If so make suggestions on wording of the petition.

Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 donate now

The 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund to assist individuals and communities affected by devastating bushfires in Victoria has been launched by the Premier John Brumby in partnership with Red Cross and the Federal Government. A number of corporate organisations including NAB, ANZ, CBA and Wesfarmers have also contributed to the fund.

As at 7:30pm on the 9th February, the Fund had received $8.6 million from over 49,000 website and phone donations, with governments including the Victorian Government and Federal Government and corporates pledging additional sums. Donations are still continuing to flow in.

An independent panel made up of community leaders will oversee the appeal Fund's operation. Criteria for assistance will include the extent of the hardship covered and the extent to which a person's livelihood has been impacted.

Donations can be made using our secure online donations form or by phoning 1800 811 700

 Common questions about your donation

Red Cross Response

Around 20 evacuation centres are being run by over 400 Red Cross volunteers and staff to:

  • register the names of people affected by the fires so that family and friends can contact Red Cross to check that they are ok
  • provide meals for fire fighters, police and other emergency services personnel, as well as people in relief centres
  • provide first aid to assist emergency services personnel and affected people
  • provide personal support to volunteers -- emotional support, information and referrals to recovery services.

Checking on friends and family in the area

  • people should ring 1800 727 077 if they are unable to contact someone in the affected areas
  • for people overseas enquiring about family and friends in the bushfire affected areas, please call +61 3 9328 3716
  • details on the full impact of the fires are sketchy as many of them are still burning. We continue to be guided by fire authorities and the State Government
  • our focus at the moment is to ensure the wellbeing of people who have been affected by the fires.

I can't get through on the website/donations form/phone line!

Due to the huge volume of people who are visiting our website and ringing our phone lines you may experience some short delays. Please be patient, and try again a little later -- we appreciate your donation tremendously and ask for your patience during this unprecedented response.

Businesses wanting to donate

If you are a business and want to make a financial donation or engage staff in the Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009, you can email businesspartnerships@redcross.org.au or phone Daniel Murphy on 02 9290 8943, Luke Gracie on 03 9341 7520 or Nikki Williams on 03 9341 7518.

Please do not donate goods

We are not accepting goods because it often costs more to collect and transport than to purchase from local businesses. These businesses have often also been badly impacted and can benefit from the activity. Currently we are focused on people's immediate needs. If we identify a specific need we will make a public call.

Volunteering

Over 400 volunteers have been involved in the response with more trained and experienced people on standby. We are not currently seeking any more volunteers. This may change in the coming days as needs become clearer and we will make a public callout if necessary.

Offers of housing and accommodation

The Department of Human Services is coordinating donations of billeting/housing and accommodation. Please call the Department on 03 9096 0000 or 1300 650 172 within Victoria.

Blood Donations

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service is not presently calling for emergency donations. Nonetheless, the Blood Service encourages all Victorians wanting to assist possible victims of this weekend's bushfires to call 13 14 95 or use the online registration form at the Blood Service website to make an appointment to donate blood in the coming and days and weeks. These pledges will ensure blood stocks remain at safe levels, including additional coverage for use by burns and other victims resulting from this weekend's bushfire emergency.

Other agencies and contacts

  • Salvation Army is providing emergency relief
  • St Vincent de Paul -- general inquiry line operational tomorrow
  • Brotherhood of St Lawrence is not accepting donations of any kind for this event at this time
  • Smith Family not currently accepting donations of any kind specifically for this event
  • Australian Red Cross Blood service is encouraging people to donate blood. People should call 13 14 95 during Monday to Friday to make an appointment.
